In All4Skills participants will learn practical ways to improve their writing, reading, speaking and listening skills. Practical here means what they can do with what they have around them in ways that they enjoy and like. After all, language learning should be fun and natural!
The seminar starts with attitude-setting questions. When learning a second or foreign language, our attitude determines whether the learning process will be smooth or bumpy.
ESB All 4 Skills CONTENT
i. WWE 7-DC We challenge students to ‘wrestle’ with English through our Wrestling With English 7-Day Challenge. There are 4 specific actions they must take for seven days in a row, as a start, to help build the right habit for a language learner. These actions are simple, fun, fulfilling and effects are far-reaching. The goal is to create an English-friendly surrounding. This is an attitude challenge.
ii. READERS ARE LEADERS “Are you a reader?” This is the core skill, very important and critical for a language learner. Students will see how words make up the language. The more they read, the more they see words, thus expanding their vocabulary. WWE challenge no.1 aims to train participants to start a reading habit by simply scattering reading materials around them – as a start! Our coaches will also share reading tips by using common sense. Packed with lively delivery and plenty of hands-on skills for students.
iii. THE LANGUAGE INCIDENTS Language is made of words and expressions. It’s great if we can memorize the whole dictionary to be good at English. However, there are other fun ways to expand vocabulary – by making language incidents! This is a cool way to really, really remember new words that students learn everyday. Our coaches will demonstrate 5 styles to get to know English words better. 100% students’ involvement throughout this session, and they’ll laugh their hearts out!
iv. WRITE IT RIGHT The two most common writing problems for students are limited vocabulary and limited ideas. This slot helps them to overcome these obstacles. Our coaches guide participants to make use of all the simple English words and phrases they already have inside the brain to make the writing smooth and easy. Secondly, to generate ideas for essay writing, having a journal is a bonus. In addition, students will see how speed writing practice helps them catch grammar and improve handwriting.
v. SPEAK WITH STYLE Students will change their common English words to more stylish ones, starting with basic scripts of YES, NO, THANK YOU and YOU’RE WELCOME. Our approach to Spoken English is ‘comfortable, confident, fluent.’ In other words, we believe language learners should be brave to let the words out from their mouths first. Mistakes will be made, but that’s part of the learning process. Soon, the confidence will come. After all, in language practice makes fluent. We also share pointers to keep conversation going.
vi. CATCHING ENGLISH We save this for last – the first language skill one acquires. To listen well, participants will learn to differentiate between hearing and listening. Being a good listener means we must use our ears, eyes and also brain and heart. Then only we can catch the message. Students are reminded how they learned their first language, which was through listening and mimicking. Same process applies for second and foreign languages. The coaches will discuss 3 practical tips for listening – the CAT formula.

i. READ SUCCEED!
Merely knowing the alphabets, sounding them and understanding the meaning do not necessarily mean one can grasp the real meaning behind printed words.
Reading is a skill and it has to be polished to ensure maximum input effectiveness. This extended session discusses more on how to be a better reader. What are the things that make a person a true reader? Participants will be exposed to the world of reading. There are various types of reading styles and what one can do to discover his or her own style.
Once the participants are exposed to reading as a skill, they will be able to gain the followings:
- The enjoyment of reading for exam and/or pleasure
- The skill on how to read multiple books simultaneously.
- Enhance reading speed but at the same time enhance comprehension.
This session will be suited according to the audience level of proficiency.
ii. THE LANGUAGE INCIDENTS
This session will elaborate more on vocabulary. Most people tend to agree that English is a ‘crazy’ language; for example, why does a quicksand work slowly? Why are boxing rings square? Why on earth do people call a guinea pig …a guinea pig? Since it is neither from Guinea nor it is a pig.
Despite its ‘craziness’ and because of it, English is a fun language. Knowing another language besides our mother tongue definitely gives confidence. Confidence takes people far in life. Thus, to really memorize words in English is simply not through dictionary memorization i.e. open a dictionary and trying to remember the words. There are other fun ways to do that!
Participants will see how a single word grows into phrasal verbs, idioms, famous phrases and much more. They will also learn the origin and history of the words.
“The Language Incidents” will be explained further so that the participants will see in total clarity how people learn words and remember them.
iii. WRITE IT RIGHT
Ample reading produces fluent writing. Once participants learn to overcome the two most common writing problems i.e. limited vocabulary and limited ideas, they shall discover that writing is a fulfilling habit. Writing is not just for exams. It is a tool for self-expression. Good essay writing is like building a Lego structure – the act of “Lego-ing” starts with connecting letters to form words, words turn into sentences, sentences make paragraphs and finally an effective essay is produced.
How to get the ideas flowing? Think of the brain as a water tap. The more we use the tap, the faster the water flows. Hence, through practice, the more we write the more the ideas flow. Participants will be reminded of the tried and tested way of recording ideas – through journal writing.
What about grammar? Grammar is the foundation of good writing. The shocking truth is that many university students do not even know when to use ‘am’, ‘is’, ‘are’, ‘was’, ‘were’ correctly. Sometimes they can get it right and sometimes they get it wrong. If even in writing where they have ample time to think, they can get it wrong, just imagine what happens when they speak. Although grammar can be learned, we will also show them that grammar is mostly absorbed or caught. How to catch grammar? Through reading, of course.
